And all along, she has been managing chronic anxiety. In First, We Make the Beast Beautiful, Wilson directs her intense focus and fierce investigating skills onto her lifetime companion, looking at the triggers and treatments, the fashions and fads. She reads widely and interviews fellow sufferers, mental health experts, philosophers, and even the Dalai Lama, processing all she learns through the prism of her own experiences.Wilson offers readers comfort, humor, companionship, and practical tips for living with the Beast:Cultivate a "gratitude ritual." It will encourage the myriad souls who dance with this condition to embrace it as a part of who they are, and to explore the possibilities it offers for a richer, fuller life.Book First, We Make the Beast Beautiful: A New Journey Through Anxiety Review :
As someone who deals with anxiety, I would not consider this a "self help" book. Matter of fact I actually felt like it triggered my anxiety and I felt worse after reading the first few chapters. I do think the author's perspective is an interesting take. Maybe more suitable for people who don't genuinely suffer from anxiety but are interested in it. In truth, I would not read this again. Ms. Wilson has figured out how to monetize her privelege ("Click my website for more info...") and while certainly mindfulness and learning to let go are important aspects of a healthy, whole being, she does a disservice (possibly even damage) to suggest that her mania is anxiety. It's bipolarity. Those with anxiety often can't function. To suggest she could get off meds--and then at the end of the book reveal that while writing it, she tried to kill herself twice, and is still dangerously codependent--is unhelpful, and glorifies what may be cherry-picked and really hurtful for some who read it and don't know their own diagnoses. I question the judgment of the editor who let this misinformation wrapped up in skinny white girl privilege (not everyone with mania or anxiety can flee to a nice beach) divulge this irresponsible perspective. It reads as all too much money-making. At least, then, for those of us who see through the mania cum capitalist privilege, we can find comfort that the book will, like every infotainment distraction, be a flash in the pan and forgotten by next year.
